The “100 Best Products of 2005” in the July issue features the finest products and services of the last year, from advanced digital cameras to workgroup printers, from ACDSee 7 to ZoneAlarm Antivirus. There's a playfulness and wit to this ongoing co-feature that's rarely seen these days in comics (well, at least outside of Cornell and Spencer's work on this book), which is why I hope it finds a place once DC eliminates these back-ups.PC World today announced the winners of its annual World Class Awards. This week, at least, Nick Spencer and RB Silva's Jimmy Olsen back-up is the star of the show, and I continue to have a blast reading their take on the goofy, light-hearted Silver Age Olsen tales. And even then, the issue comes across as little more than a set-up for the upcoming crossover between Action and Secret Six, rather than the type of worthwhile, complete episodic adventures Cornell delivered in previous chapters.

The main difference between this issue and previous ones is that here Cornell gets a little too cute for his own good, spending a great deal of time dancing between moments from past stories in an effort to explain why Vandal Savage could hear a prophecy warning him against Lex Luthor in the 14th century without having once confronted Lex with this information in all his dealings with the villain in the 20th.Īnd although many of Cornell's rationales are funny and often clever, in the end they come across as a sort of stalling tactic on the writer's part – a way of spinning the story's wheels before Luthor and Savage can face off in the present. Lex Luthor's quest to find the source of the Black Rings' power causes him to cross paths with Vandal Savage in Action Comics #895, another fun, lively and creative installment of Paul Cornell and Pete Woods run.
